According to IBM, “Data security is the practice of protecting digital information from unauthorized access, corruption, or theft throughout its entire lifecycle. It’s a concept that encompasses every aspect of information security from the physical security of hardware and storage devices to administrative and access controls, as well as the logical security of software applications. It also includes organizational policies and procedures.”
Here at OptConnect, we take data security very seriously. That is why every OptConnect device comes with access to its own secure private network. When it comes to data security, there are typically questions around what it consists of and how it works. So in today’s post, we will be answering some of the most commonly asked data security questions.
What is the difference between Public IP and Private IP?
A public IP address identifies you to the wider internet so that all the information you're searching for can find you. A private IP address is used within a private network to connect securely to other devices within that same network. Each device within the same network has a unique private IP address.
What is the biggest reason to use private IP addressing?
Data protection and privacy. One of the biggest reasons to choose a private address space is privacy. Since devices on the private network aren't connected to the outside internet, no data can enter or exit the network.
How does OptConnect/carrier data flow?
By default, all OptConnect customer generated public internet requests are handled and routed by the carrier through the carrier firewalls for the highest level of security.
What is the difference between APN and VPN?
An APN, or Access Point Name, is a gateway that allows you to connect to the internet via your carrier network. On the other hand, a VPN or Virtual Private Network is a technology that creates a secure connection to another network over the internet. Usually, you need internet access for a VPN connection to work.
